Woodland Kiwanis Rocks
Tuesday, March 30, 2010 ::

For the third year in a row, the Woodland Kiwanis will cook and provide the BBQ for the 4th Annual Backpacks for Kids “Family Fun Day” event scheduled for July 17th from 11 to 3pm at Ferns Park, Woodland. This fund raising event to provide school supplies for children each year would not be possible without the support and commitment of our local Kiwanis.

I get some crazy letters sometimes. People send me coupons, press clippings, and rants -- and those are just the letters that come from the Vice-Mayor of Woodland.
Well this past week I got a real winner. I am not posting it here because it is just too crazy. I think the person has a mental illness. Because I don't understand it I am not even going to write back.

Woodland is happy with our law enforcement

Good to see in the newspaper that my pal Al Rojas was back in town trying to change Woodland. His trip over from Sacramento even brought news cameras -- his goal.
My point -- Who cares?
When I read David Greenwald's piece just not on the Davis Vanguard I noticed that not a single person has commented on it. My favorite part is that in one of the pictures on Vanguard the sign says "Free Education for All. Tax the Rich." Right. Most of the people from Woodland were probably working to pay taxes to support subsidized education while this protest was going on. The answer to everything seems to be to raise taxes.
This has nothing to do with anything except Al Rojas seeking media attention.

The Marine Corps lost a good man today in Afghanistan. Semper Fidelis.
Sgt. Major Cottle was stationed with me in Reno for a couple years. God bless his wife and daughter.
I will be drinking a Corona in his memory.
Read more on Sgt. Major Cottle here.
Time for me to go hug my kids and say some prayers.

County Budget Hearings
Tuesday, March 23, 2010 ::

You know how on American Idol last yer when Adam Lambert was first up -- everyone else was in bad shape for the rest of the night?
That may have happened today in Yolo County when ADMH Department Head Kim Suderman made her budget presentation. She and her staff made a wonderful presentation on their budget.
In my three plus years on the Board of Supervisors and four years on the Woodland City Council I have not seen a better prepared or presented report.
We are going over each department program by program. Today was ADMH and Employment and Social Services. It was a really informative day.
If you are interested in county government and/or ADMH and/or DESS I would encourage you to pick up a copy of the budget packets that were prepared.

We are a democracy

So people have gone off the deep end on this health care thing.
Let me state some facts from the start... 1) I did not vote for the President in November 2008. 2) I would not have supported the bill on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday.
Here are a couple other facts that are important. 1) President Obama won the election. Quite easily I might add. 2) Democrats took over a Republican Congress that I would argue was corrupt. 3) The Democrats all told their constituents that they were going to have the government take over health care.
So now I have Facebook Friends flying the flag of our country upside down, people upset with the President, and people being nuts.
At one point today I was even called a "traitor" because I said that I would help the President if called upon. Yep. Look -- President Obama is the President of the United States of America. If my phone were to ring and he said "Matt, I need you to [fill in the blank with any legal act that would not jeopardize my faith or my family]." I would say "Yes, Mr, President" and go do it.
Further, the flag that people are flying upside down represents a democracy that we get to use to vote (or not) them right out of office. Our country is not in distress. We made a poor policy decision but we are not in distress.
We still live in the greatest country on earth and while I disagree with President Obama and Congresman Thompson I believe they were consistent with the views they expressed during the last election when we elected them. Get over it. If you don't like it -- then vote them out of office.
I am ready for the hate mail.

So far I don't see too many people that own businesses with ten or more people promoting the health care plan proposed by the President.

Let's be honest

So I just heard someone make the dumbest argument I have heard in ages. The argument was that Democrats are to blame he problems in Sacramento because they have had control of the Assembly and Senate for years. Ok. That is true.
Think about this. Governor Deukmejian was around for eight years. Republican. Governor Wilson was around for eight years. Republican. Gray Davis was around for five years. Democrat. Governor Schwarzenegger will end up being in office for seven years. Republican.
Scoreboard?
Republicans = 23
Democrats = 5
Not one piece of legislation can get approved without the signature of the Governor and administrative regulation is almost entirely controlled by the Governor and his appointees. So who is responsible?
I would argue that it is individuals that are the problem not the parties they come from.
I told the person that said this to look in the mirror -- the log in their own eye is pretty big.

Water

I would encourage any of you that are interested in Yolo County water issues to watch the discussion by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. It is an important issue with an important discussion.
This is partly political partly straight policy that becomes complicated.
Clearly McGowan and I have strongly different views on part and agree on others.
Note: My allergies were killing me on Tuesday (as they are tonight) so I don't sound right.

Rexroad Ballot Statement
Tuesday, March 16, 2010 ::

This is the ballot statement I would have used.
Matt Rexroad
Supervisor/Small Businessman
Woodland has been my home since I was a child. I grew up here and now my wife Jenn and I are raising our own family here.
During my time on the Board of Supervisors I have been working hard to reform County government. There are many things that we are doing better but we still have a long way to go.
As the budget challenges continue to mount I will keep asking questions and insisting that we act responsibly with the money that has been entrusted to us by the taxpayers. Last year I was the only vote against the budget. We simply spent too much money that we did not have.
Bringing Clark Pacific from West Sacramento to located just North of Woodland was a huge accomplishment. Working with county staff and other community leaders we were able to bring the potential of 300 good paying jobs to an old abandoned sugar mill that had been sitting empty for more than five years.
Providing more than 1,500 fully equipped backpacks for Yolo County school children has been something that my office has championed. Each year Yolo County Backpacks for Kids has helped school children start the school year the right way.
Recognizing volunteers with the Woodlander of the Month program has been something we started my first year in office. Teaming up with the Mayor of Woodland and the local newspaper we have attempted to thank those volunteers that are the backbone of our community.
The Gibson Historical Museum has been a focus for me. We have made some hard decisions to get the facility to a more financially sustainable position. We have also improved the lighting and provided restrooms so the facility can be more useful to the community. It is right in the center of Woodland and needs to be preserved.
The coming year will be challenging in Yolo County. We are facing an enormous fiscal challenge. In the process of determining our course of action I will continue to personally answer every e-mail, letter, or call. I am looking for ideas and am willing to consider them from anywhere.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve the people of Woodland. I’m very blessed to represent such a wonderful community.
Semper Fidelis,
Matt Rexroad

Politiclast Obituary

So I think that McLovin' has finally bit the dust. All hat and no cattle.
1) No memo on methodology for the polling in the city council race
2) No Woodpile cartoon -- remember the promise by Thanksgiving?
All promises no delivery.
Note: I realize that each time I do this he/it rises like Lazarus from the dead. This time I am not so hopeful.
Obituary for McLovin'
Never knew the dude. Had tons of potential that was unrealized. Could make people laugh and sometimes get people to scratch their heads.
No one even knew what he/she/it looked like.
McLovin' is survived by his hero Art Pimentel.

Board this week
Sunday, March 14, 2010 ::
0 Comments
This week we have quite a few county meetings early in the week.
On Monday from 3-5 the Water Resources Association will be meeting at the Community Center. I will be interested to see how that meeting goes. The county water proposal is on the agenda.
On Tuesday the Board of Supervisors meets. The agenda includes....
Endorsing a resolution to make Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation a member of the Emergency Communications JPA. This general issue came up during the Conaway Ranch debate. I said then that I could think of many good reasons to have tribal governments part of a JPA and this is one of them.
We will vote on accepting the completions of Road 22 repairs. Staff did a great job on this project.
The Board will get an update from the Yolo County Water Committee.
Formal meeting should all be in the morning. Meetings get shorter when you have no money to spend and the budget meetings will dominate the schedule over the coming months.

Not sure what to think
Friday, March 12, 2010 ::

For whatever reason no one but me filed to run for Supervisor this year from Woodland. So, absent a complete meltdown, it looks like I will not have to spend countless hours campaigning between now and November.
This really is a shock to me. I expected someone to take out papers and give it a shot.
Now I have to think about the right way to handle this. This is something that I will work on over the next few days.
So, no matter if it is because you think I am doing a good job, you think serving as a Supervisor would stink, or that making budget cuts is not for you, I am thankful to have a good chance of serving for another four years on the board.
Most importantly, four years ago when Adam was born the campaign took a great deal of time away from a very special time in my family life. Those are times that I will never have the chance to get back.
Have a great weekend.

Comment on Student Protests at UC Davis
Friday, March 12, 2010 ::

"If students want to sit in Mrak Hall and beat on bongo drums that is up to the University. However, when the Sheriff has to send out officers in riot gear and lives are put at risk by attempting to block a major interstate highway this is more than a college prank.
Several Woodland residents were not able to make it to work on time or were prevented from getting home to their families because of these selfish student actions. They seem ok with negatively impacting the lives of taxpayers but when it comes to making sure they don't have to sell their ipod to pay for tuition it becomes a civil right. Nonsense."

County Tax -- Not a chance
Wednesday, March 03, 2010 ::

This article appears in the Daily Democrat today.
Not only did I say that it is unlikely that this tax will pass but I am likely to oppose any tax increases at this time -- including the City of Woodland measure, the state water bond, and any effort by the county to raise taxes.
It is not going to pass and it is not the right time.

California Budget Project

This is some good information from the California Budget Project passed on to me by Supervisor Thomson.
Growing_Need.pdf
I think it makes the case of why when the county gets to a better financial place we need to save a ton of money to get through the next recession. If county government is going to be a safeety net then we need to save our pennies for tough economic times.
